New York, F. Tennyson Neely, 1898, hardcover, 224 pp, First Edition, Good condition in blue cloth boards decorated with red and silver. Straight and very firmly bound with no markings, spots to boards, spine a bit faded, light spine-end and corner wear, stain to bottom edge, faint evidence of dampstain to top edge of a few pages. The Georgia native and popular Victorian author of 30 novels presents a Sherlock Holmes-style detective story featuring a taunting villain, a particularly gruesome murder, and an Indian mystic and master hypnotist in a castle with a secret dungeon.

New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1893. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Dan Beard. 260 + 9 pages of ads. Tan cloth, gilt, brown and black lettering and decoration. Bright copy, spine sunned and a tiny spot, but readable, bookplate of owners tipped-in on front endpapers, some cracking to gutter, text is clean.

London:: A. Fullarton and Co.,. Hardback. Half bound in dark blue leather. Illustrated with 20 engravings from drawings by Clarkson Stanfield, Esq, R.A. Two novellas originally published just nine years earlier. Raised bands and gilt titles to spine with the date 1845 to the tail of the spine. Maroon, beige and light blue marbled papers to boards. Gilt to all edges. Marbled endpapers. Leather is somewhat scuffed to surface intermittently along the spine joints, to the leather corners and in just a couple of places to the raised bands. Small area of exposed board to the tip of one corner. A little rubbed to edges. Leather remains sound to the joints, likewise inner hinges. Occasional foxing and brown blemishes, mostly minor, chiefly to margins, though some text and illustrations affected. Remains a readable and attractive copy. Good+, sound copy . Hardback. 1845.

Text clean, no foxing, lightly yellowed with age, no prior owner attributions or markings in any of the volumes. Illustrated with 54 wood-engravings, including a a depiction of the author on the frontispiece of volume one. Gilting on front cover and spine of each volume shows various evidence of shelfwear.
