WWII-era Black troops Archive of six black and white photos measuring 4" x 6" to 8" x 10". Four of the photos depict the Black soldiers on a ship, during the journey overseas. One press photo caption indicates they are headed for England, while the other three are from the same set and depict military personnel of all races aboard the deck of a large cruise ship. The soldiers appear overjoyed; this could suggest that for some of them, they are headed home for good. The press photo of the black soldiers on their way to England shows them crouched in a circle betting on a game of dominoes "Somewhere on the Atlantic." Another striking image shows a group of soldiers congregating in a compact space, possibly the cabin of a ship, looking on at something and some with pens and pads in their hands, possibly another instance of gambling to pass the time on a long sea voyage. Finally, a striking image of an all black unit, the 841st Quartermaster Department, is take from a low angle and shows these Black soldiers standing at attention on the jet strip of Ellington Field, Texas, looking statuesque as the afternoon sun beams on them and creates long shadows which angle off of them. The 841st was "Known as the best drilled organization at the world's largest multi-motor flying school, where they are stationed, these men have been thoroughly trained in all phases of military life and customs.", as per the caption on verso. Photographs in very good condition overall.
