Three early nineteenth century English translations of the historical narratives of Xenophon of Athens and Arrian of Nicomedia. Illustrated with a folding map frontispiece. The third work is Mr. Rooke's 1812 translation of Arrian's account of Alexander the Great's conquest of Persia. With the library bookplate of Repton School to the front pastedown, and their stamp to the title page of the first work. Two fascinating historical narratives by the Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian, who was elected commander of one of the biggest Greek mercenary armies of the Achaemenid Empire. For over two millennia, Xenophon's diverse talents fuelled the debate of whether to place him amongst history's greatest generals, historians or philosophers. In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Joints starting, with boards firmly held. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Stamp to first title page. Pages generally bright, but with instances of spotting and foxing throughout, most concentrated to folding maps and first and last few pages of each volume. Good
