After the Mongol Yuan empire collapsed in China in the mid-14th century, the succeeding Ming dynasty ordered the compilation of a History of the Yuan based on Chinese precedent. This book was published in 1370. The History of the Yuan was "compiled in greater haste than the other dynastic histories were, and in consequence it suffers from inadequate preparation and careless editing" (Twitchett & Franke, "Bibliographical Essays," 689). Scholars in the Qing dynasty sought to revise or supplement the History to solve these problems.


Ke Shaomin (1848-1933) was one of these scholars. A presented scholar in 1886, Ke worked in the Hanlin Academy and as an editor of the imperial diary. He finished a New History of the Yuan in 1920. Our book contains notes to the New History. It was published posthumously by Peking University, a leading institution of higher learning in the Republican period.
