Full red Morocco double ruled in gilt with beautiful, elaborate gilt decorations. Corners bumped with moderate rubbing to joints. Shelf wear to top and bottom of spine. Gilt decorations and lettering to spine. All edges gilt. Front board starting on inner hinge. Black and gold patterned endpapers. Pages lightly tanned, occasional spotting on top margin. Title-page lettered in black and red. Lavishly illustrated with 36 plates total (16 of which are vibrantly colored chromolithographs), and 291 black and white in-text illustrations. Decorative headpieces, tailpieces, and historiated initials throughout. Pencil annotations pp. 337 and 391. Very beautiful book. Profusely illustrated book that surveys the institutions, customs, and fashions of seventeenth-century France from 1590 until 1700. By the French author and journalist Paul Lacroix. Includes chapters on the French Wars of Religion, the reign of Marie de Medici, Henry IV, and Louis XIIIi, the Fronde, charitable institutions and convents, the bourgeois, ceremonies and processions, and the theatre.
