Lang was a contemporary and friend of Robert Louis Stevenson. He was educated in Edinburgh and St. Andrews before matriculating at Bailliol College, Oxford. He was later a fellow at Merton College, Oxford. Although he published works on such diverse subjects as Scottish history and anthropology, he is best remembered, however, as the collector of fairytales and folklore, brought out as Andrew Lang's "Fairy Books of Many Colours," the twelve books of which secured his place in the pantheon of juvenile literature. .
