Blue cloth covered boards with color illustration pasted on front covers and gold lettering on spine. Tiny bit of nicking and fraying to the cloth at corner tips and top and bottom of spine. Light overall scuffing, soling and fading to cover as well. Binding tight. Illustrated endpapers have some discoloration from age. Previous owner's gift inscription dated 1939 on front free end paper. Pages lightly aged but otherwise unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. Includes 4 nice color illustrations and title page illustrations by Frank E. Schoonover [From Foreword] THE story of Yankee ship voyages in thedays when the great merchants of Boston,Salem and other New England seaportswere sending out their vessels westward around Cape Horn to the Northwest Coast and the Pacific Islands and eastward around the Cape of Good Hope to India, Sumatra, Java and China, is a chronicle filled with the most amazing adventures on sea and shore. Pirates of yellow or brown skin infested the wafers of the East Indies, the Fiji Islanders were cannibals and enjoyed making "Salem stew," China, except for the port of Canton, was forbidden to foreigners; yet Yankee captains dared all perils in theirquest for markets and frequently by native shrewdness and sheer audacity won rich cargoes and brought them safely home.There is a foundation of fact underlying most of the adventures related in this book; either the stories are based on actual happenings or are of events that might well have taken place in those days when there were so many Salem pepper ships off the coast of Sumatra that the Malays "believied Salem to be a country by itself, and one of the richest and most important sections of the globe,
