New York: Optimus Printing Company, 1879. Rosebud Edition. Hardcover. Fair. SCARCE AMERICAN EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC GHOST STORY BY THE AUTHOR OF "THE MOONSTONE". Original yellow/gray cloth stamped in blue. The acidic paper of this edition is browned and brittle. Complete and intact but this is a fragile collectible which needs to be handled with care. One of several pirated American editions published in the 19th century before the implementation of international copyright laws. It was common at this time for American publishers to produce unathorized cheap reprints of popular British fiction. This is one of several books in the publisher's Rosebud series and dates to 1879 per WorldCat. The story itself is a classic Victorian ghost tale, a genre in which Collins excelled.
