Sobre este artículo

New York: Underwood & Underwood, [1902].. 70pp. plus folding topographical map and twenty-four stereoscope views on individual mounts. Narrow 12mo. Text: Original printed wrappers. Vertical crease through the center. Map with a three-inch split along one of the vertical folds and another at a cross-fold. Old tideline in lower margin of text. Good overall. Stereoscopes in fine condition. All contained in original gilt cloth case, two of the corners of the case top are secured with tape; some worming and spotting to the cloth on the case cover. An interesting stereoscopic tour of Yosemite, with accompanying text. The text includes a brief history of Yosemite, instructions on using the stereoscope, and extended descriptions of each view. The stereoscopes were produced by Sun Sculpture Works and Studios of Arlington and Westwood, New Jersey. The Underwood firm patented a hand- held stereoscopic viewer in 1901 under the "Sun Sculpture" trademark. Each card is captioned on the verso in English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, and Russian, and several cards contain long explanatory text on the verso as well. The map at the rear of the text volume, copyrighted by Underwood & Underwood, is keyed to the number on the views, allowing the user to pinpoint the location of the scene in the greater context of Yosemite Valley. The views are (as captioned on the verso):

1) "From Inspiration Point Through Yosemite Valley, California." Bridal Veil Falls is visible in this view.

2) "El Capitan (3,300 feet high), the most impressive Cliff in Yosemite, California, U.S.A."

3) "Ribbon Falls (2,000 ft. Leap) looking north, from the Valley near Merced River, Yosemite, California."

4) "El Capitan, a Solid Granite Mountain, 3,300 ft. high, Yosemite Valley, California."

5) "'The Three Brothers,' Eagle Peak in Centre, Yosemite, Cal."

6) "North Dome, Half Dome, and Clouds Rest (E.N.E.) from north of River opposite 'Three Brothers,' Yosemite Valley, California."

7) "Mirror View of the Majestic Cathedral Rocks - looking (W. S. W.) down the Valley, Yosemite, California."

8) "Amidst Yosemite's charms - Sentinel Hotel, looking N. to Yosemite Falls, California, U.S.A."

9) "Majestic Yosemite Point, and wind- sprayed Yosemite Falls (1600 ft. leap, looking N. N. E.), Yosemite Valley, California."

10) "The Valley, Half, Dome, Nevada Falls, Cap of Liberty and imposing Sierras (E. S. E.), from Eagle Peak, Yosemite, California."

11) "Yosemite Falls, from Glacier Point Trail, Cal., U.S.A"

12) "Look straight up the sheer face of Glacier Point, 3,000 ft. to the overhanging Rocks, Yosemite Valley, California."

13) "Look straight down from Overhanging Rocks, Glacier Point, 3257 ft. into the Valley below, Yosemite, California."

14) Mount misnumbered 14 and carrying a caption title as on mount 14 above, but should be captioned "Nearly a Mile Straight Down; Glacier Point, Yosemite Valley, California."

15) "Overlooking Nature's grandest Scenery, Yosemite Valley, Cal."

16) "From Glacier Point (N. E.) up Tenaiya Canon, over Mirror Lake, Half Dome and Clouds Rest (to right) from Glacier Point (N. E.), California."

17) "Nevada and Vernal Falls and Cap of Liberty, Yosemite Valley, Cal., U.S.A."

18) "Amidst the majestic Heights of Yosemite Valley, U.S.A."

19) "On the Brink of a Chasm, Yosemite Valley, Cal." Depicts Glacier Canyon and Half Dome.

20) "Climbing up the steep Zig-Zag, at eastern end of Yosemite Valley."

21) "Nevada Falls (605 ft. high) and Cap of Liberty (1800 feet high) from Trail, looking east, Yosemite Valley, California."

22) "Mirror Lake, where Nature Multiplies her Charms, Yosemite, Cal." Mount Watkins is shown in the background and is reflected in the lake.

23) "From Clouds Rest (N. N. E.) over Lake Tenaiya to the distant Matterhorn (12,176 feet), Sierra Nevada Mts., California."

24) "From Clouds Rest (S. E.) over Little Yosemite Valley to Mt. Clark (11,250 feet), Sierra Nevada Mountains, California."

Rocq appears to be in error in calling for eighty-six pages. An important early visual record of one of the American West's great natural wonders. Rare and very desirable. ROCQ 5289.
