Announcement of the "Open Hearing" held on behalf of thirteen expelled students, with a graphic image of a judge on the recto, and a length text along with lists of participants and sponsors on the rear. Following a peace rally in April 1940, University President Alexander G. Ruthven, fearing fifth-column Communist organizing on campus, expelled the students, mostly members of the left-wing American Student Union. The case drew national attention at a time when the country was deeply divided over the war in Europe. At this culminating event in November, a range of speakers including representatives of the Civil Rights Federation, labor unions, professors and activists, denounced Ruthven and defended the students' first amendment rights. In the end, however, the students remained expelled and a year later the U.S. was in the war.
