New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1976. 22 pp + plate section containing 197 colour and b&w examples, square (9 3/8" H x 9 3/8" D). B&w photographs of stitches and b&w stitch diagrams. "This book describes the folk art embroidery as it flourished in the Yugoslavian republic of Croatia until the early twentieth century. Ordinary, otherwise unskilled women transmitted their extraordinary skills from generation to generation, using traditional materials, stitches, and motifs to ornament their clothing and national costumes. Their work integrated influences from historic periods and styles, but the rich heterogeneity of motifs, the vitality of the color schemes, and the perfection of techniques remained their own. The designs and techniques shown are being used today in Yugoslavia, even though the drive to use them in their pure form is no longer there. In spite of the sophisticated, pefectly realized appearance of the work, many of the patterns are simple and made with a number of relatively easily mastered techniques which are fully described in this book." Contents: Foreword; Information on the Stitches; Materials; Description of Techniques; Stitches on Counted Threads; Outline Stitches, Edgings, Borders, Fillings; Appliques; Captions; Diagrams; Plates.
