It contravened Christian dogma about how plants and animals were divinely created in final fixed states and not transformed over time according to environmental factors. Lamarck also theorized that more complex forms of life derived from simpler ones. The 1809 first edition of this work is cited in Garrison-Morton 216 and was included in the Printing and the Mind of Man exhibition in 1963. Uncommon.
