An old woman lives there. Although we never learn her name or much about her, she is the one who tells us the story of Lilac and Flag. 'Lilac' and 'Flag' are the pet names of a young man and woman, struggling to find a way to be lovers. They disappear into Troy. Troy is the second place of the novel. There is a third place in the novel, and it is the most strange. It appears to be a ship, although it is one that can travel on both water and land.
