Zeffirelli, who knew Callas well, directs this discordant drama about the supposed last days of Maria Callas who is seen popping pills while listening to her old recordings. A fictional gay character who is producing a rock concert in Paris--for a group jokingly called "Wet Dreams"--visits his old friend, Maria. Fanny Ardant, who plays her, does fairly well, although anyone who has seen the real conversations Callas had with Lord Harewood will not confuse the very elegant and intelligent woman shown there with Ardant's portrayal. As for Jeremy Irons as the producer, well there is his pony-tail.
