Additionally, this copy is Inscribed by Welty to her editor, close friend, and co-dedicatee of *The Ponder Heart*, Mary Lou Aswell: "To Mary Lou and Agi with dearest love at Christmas. Eudora. December 1979." A nice association. Polk assigns "second state" status to the green binding, but it is curious that this early numbered presentation copy is in green cloth. *Polk* A23.1.

Laid in are an archive of programs for the presentation to Ms. Welty of an honorary degree at the University of Illinois on May 20, 1979, along with assorted newspaper and magazine article clipping, envelopes, an invitation to the Slankers, and 2 color slides and 1 Polaroid photograph of Ms. Welty signing books after the ceremony.
