As president and then chairman of Cummins Engine Company, Miller emphasized a corporation's responsibility to the community in which it was located and its other stakeholders--customers, stockholders, employees, and suppliers. He was not only a patron of the arts but played a significant role in an important period in the American civil rights movement, working with presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and helping to sponsor the March on Washington. Martin Luther King Jr., once called him "the most socially responsible businessman in the country."
