Here the subject is less how to get to the top (although the first section does show how some scientists did it) than (the subject of the second section, "The Scientific Elite") how to behave and prosper once you're arrived there. The third section ("Descent from Career Peaks") provides cautionary examples of what hubris, burn-out, or malfeasance can do to wreck otherwise admirable careers.
