"In 1895 George Collingridge published 'The Discovery of Australia', the first full-length historical study to investigate early European explorations of Australia's coastline. His work is based on a series of maps known as the Dieppe maps, produced in France between 1536-66 which show a large landmass named 'Jave-la-Grande' between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and are believed to have been drawn from Portuguese originals. In 1906 Collingridge produced a revised and abridge edition, 'The First Discovery of Australia and New Guinea'. However, due to an unhappy turn of events, the book was not a success.
