The 12 essays contained in this volume constitute an assessment of the reconstruction of European cities after the Second World War. The essays are based upon new research by a body of contributors from eight countries, including architects, town planners, archivists and geographers. Several authors stress the fact that planning experiences after World War I and during the period of Nazi domination shaped post-1945 reconstruction, while others analyze the successes and failures of reconstruction under Soviet-dominated socialist regimes.
