The most radical development has been the entry of the United Kingdom into the European Community. This has introduced new sources of law into the English legal system, both in the form of legislation and by way of the decisions of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. On the institutional plane we have seen the system of Assizes swept away after seven hundred years, together with the Quarter Sessions which have served the community for centuries.
