The growing interest in the overlap between technical, legal and insurance aspects of technology and engineering is reflected in the formation of The International Society for Technology, Law and Insurance (ISTLI). The unique interdisciplinary and interprofessional character of the book will provide a long overdue cross fertilization of ideas from many disciplines and fields of application and ensure a comprehensive approach to the important impacts of technological failures on a local, national, regional and international level. This book forms the proceedings of the Founding Symposium of the Society held at the Technical University of Vienna in November 1993.
