This copy is smyth sewn. Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. Excellent consideration of traditional, fine Chinese furniture (excluding lacquer pieces). The book is a true joint effort of four kindred spirits who found themselves in the Peking of 1937 - 1938, on the eve of World War II, but where the Sino-Japanese War had already begun. Basic research was conducted house-to-house, and all photographs were taken then as well. The collaborators are George Kates, the Brooklyn Museum Curator of Oriental Art for the text; his sister Beatrice Kates and friend Caroline Bieber selected the pieces and took measurements; and Hedda Morrison took the photographs.
