That Matthew uniquely highlights Jesus as 'Emmanuel' is common knowledge among Gospel commentators. Almost wholly overlooked, however, are the deeper implications of this 'presence motif' for the enterprise of Matthean christology, as well as its centripetal force on readers of the First Gospel.
