The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and illustrations, reproductions of documents and the occasional colour photograph and colour illustration. Brick red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Bumping and rubbing to the backstrip edges and rubbing to the book edges. Rubbing and marking and faint fading of the cloth covered to the book panels. Light browning to the text block edges and to the internal text. The removal of library pocket can be seen to the lower left-hand corner of the free front end paper and there is a stainer to the top left-hand corner of the same page and to the top right-hand corner of the front paste-down.
