She was born at Ivanhoe Place in Bangor on Aug. 28, 1913. In 1935 she received a bachelor's degree from Michigan State. Her graduate work included a master's degree from Columbia University in 1945 and a doctorate in Education/English from Michigan State in 1955. Between 1935 and 1972 she taught high school home economics and English in Michigan, Oregon, Germany and Japan. While in Japan she married Henry D. Anastasas in 1965.
