The purpose of this book is to quantify, in the simplest linear approximation, how fluid extraction or injection produces stress changes in isotropic, fluid-saturated rock formations; and conversely, how loads applied to an aquifer by engineered structures, atmospheric pressure, earth and ocean tides, tectonic activity, or reservoir lake level changes produce water-level changes in wells.
