The cattle guard is a U.S. folk invention that will always be associated with the cattle industry on the Great Plains. The gate functions as a fence and a gate but allows traffic to pass through unimpeded. The cattle guard is usually wooden poles or iron poles spaced in parallel fashion over a pit or depression in the roadway for which cattle cannot gauge the depth and are afraid of stepping on the poles for fear of falling in the pit. There are no significant rips or tears in the dust jacket and it is in a clear Mylar protective cover. The interior is clean and bright with no writing or spotting detected. The book appears unread. The book includes a forward by Jimmy Skaggs, numerous black and white photographs and illustrations, and a 14-page bibliography.
