Nearly al the pictures in this book are photographs of sculptures called 'reliefs' which were carved on stone slabs lining the walls of palaces belonging to Assyrian kings about 2,800 years ago. These kings ruled the Assyrian Empire from several capital cities, of which the most famous were Nineveh and Nimrud, but after the empire was overthrown in 612 BC all trace of the cities was lost until, in the middle of the nineteenth century, their sites were discovered in what is now northern Iraq.
