In this ground-breaking book Kevin Johnston looks at the seismic effect that World War I and the Irish Revolution had on the island. There have been many books on the Irish Revolution and an increasing number on Irish participation in the Great War. But until now there has been nothing that looks at these events as a unity, which is, of course, how contemporaries experienced them. It has often been remarked that the war transformed Ireland as it did so many other places. Likewise, the Revolution that resulted in the eventual establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922 was transformative.
