In 1888 Melbourne hosted an ambitious ' Centennial International Exhibition ', to celebrate 100 years of the first foundation of Australian colony. Among the visitors was a Frenchman, Oscar Comettant, who, along with his official duties, explored Melbourne. He published his notebooks two years later in 1890 in French.
