Things are fairly normal in Hard Pan. Brigitte buys a used Weber barbeque to launch her campaign to become more Californian; Miles invites the entire town to his sixth birthday party; Short Sammy digs a huge hole by his front door after a mysterious coffin-like box arrives; Lincoln works on a secret netting project and attempts a daring rescue; a wild burro becomes a repeat visitor at Brigitte's Hard Pan Cafe; a girl named Paloma shows Lucky that it is possible to laugh almost to the point of injury; and Lucky gets trapped at the bottom of an abandoned well. Lucky's brain molecules churn around, trying to figure out how everything works, including the universe. She wonders how our Earth can be here in this part of space and yet supposedly a full-fledged member of the Milky Way galaxy. How, she wonders, can the Milky Way be our Earth's home when it is zillions of light years away? Lucky discards something she didn't know was precious and learns a couple of the secrets of the universe.
