An illustrated history and survey of the wide range of memorials that can be found in churchyards across England. Lees' study, based on all of England's Grade I or Grade II* listed memorials, begins with a discussion of the symbolism of churchyard memorials and a brief history of grave monuments from prehistory to the Anglo-Saxon, Viking and medieval periods. Chapters consider headstone types, 17th- and 18th-century chest tombs (particularly the grand chest tombs of the Cotswolds), the Gothic revival, mausolea and modern memorials. She also considers the rich variety of epitaphs which vary from detailed accounts of accidents and even murders to touching laments and Christian prayers. The book concludes with a catalogue of monuments and is clearly motivated by the rate at which such monuments are fading from our churchyards.
