MARTIN WADDELL is the recipient of the 2004 Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children's literature. He had an empty house, but proudly showed me a new bed and a new table and a new chair . . . like the playhouses we had made when he was very small. After that, what else could I do but write the story?" Martin Waddell lives in Northern Ireland.
