I like doing laundry. I remember slipping down to the basement as a child whenever my dad was in a bad mood. There I'd draw or work a jigsaw puzzle. I am one of five children, so the washer and dryer were constantly running; their humming and clanking soothed me, smothered the ranting above.

There is a structure to doing laundry. It's simple, and it's clear when the job is finished. Not so with a painting. Writing and painting are abstract journeys into unclear territory; I'm often unsure of the next step or which direction I'm heading.

In 1991, during a rinse cycle, I imagined a father in his car in a living room. He communicated by gunning the motor and beeping the horn. I thought about how confusing and scary this would be for other family members, especially a young child. I remembered my own father and his anger. I started writing Dad and Me.As Chelsea grew, I occasionally lost my temper with her. Ialways consoled myself with the thought that I'd later apologize and explain to her why it had happened, something my father had never done. But each time I got angry, I also gained insight into him. I have one child and a career I enjoy. He had five children and a job he hated. Empathy for my father's fears and frustrations allowed me to understand Dad in my story. After seven years I found the connection -- one taken from my own growing up -- that t wanted for Dad and Tommy: the space race with Russia.The year 1965 was a very exciting one for Americans. Families huddled around radios and televisions, holding hands and breath, cheering every blastoff and splash down. On June third, Ed White left the Gemini Four capsule to walk in space As a six-year-old I found the idea thrilling; as a grown-up I found in it the situation of the father-son relationship I was coming to understand. Even though it's Tommy who is pretending to float in outer space, Dad is the distant one. They suffer a near-disconnect, but the story brings them together. Communication and connection are essential for a healthy relationship as well as for a successful space walk.
