Born in Kentucky of venerablePresbyterian Huguenot, and Scotch-Irish stock, he was reared in the valley of Virginia. After graduation from Washington and Lee University in 1914, he served until 1917 as national secretary of the Y.M.C.A. for private preparatory schools. In 1917 and 1918, he saw action as an artilleryman with the First Division in France and after the war attended Oxford as a Rhodes scholar.
