This is the first in-depth look at the work of Yoshio Taniguchi (b. 1937), one of the most highly respected architects working today. His buildings are elegant and serene, and he brings to all his projects a sensitivity to site and pragmatic requirements, as well as to materials, light, color, and proportion. Over the past 20 years, Taniguchi has designed a wide range of structures, all in Japan. In 1997, he came to international attention when he won an invited competition to design the expansion of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Generously illustrated with drawings and photographs, this book documents nearly 20 of Taniguchi's buildings and projects, including libraries, schools, a hotel, an aquarium, a tea house and garden, and the Museum of Modern Art expansion. Taniguchi has written commentaries on each one, as well as a brief essay discussing his development as an architect. Fumihiko Maki, another of Japan's leading architects and a Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate, provides an insightful text on Taniguchi's work.
