This includes a thorough examination of evidence concerning the operation and structure of the hospital, the hospital patronage, the individual donors, and a study of the devotional function of the paintings in relationship to the religious life and health care in the hospital. To understand the paintings as devotional images, both meaning and composition are investigated and compared to artistic prototypes. This leads to the second theme of the dissertation: Memlinc's relationship to earlier pictorial tradition, especially Rogier van der Weyden, and the question of dependency and innovation.
