Brown, CBE, FBA Sometime Fellow of All Souls, came to the Chair in Economics at the University of Leeds in 1947 from the Economic Section of the Cabinet Office after serving in the Foreign Office during the Second World War. During his time at Leeds he has continued to participate in public affairs. He was a member of the East African Economic and Fiscal Commission and of the Government Advisory Group on Central Africa. He was a member also of the UN Consultative Group on the Economic and Social Consequences of Disarmament and subsequently also of the Hunt Committee on Intermediate Areas. He is at present President of the Royal Economic Society and a Member of the University Grants Committee. His publications include The Great Inflation, 1939-51, The Framework of Regional Economics in the United Kingdom and Industrialisation and Trade.
