Both were married to men regarded as leaders in the art world. Joy and Sunday occupied their positions in the traditional role of wives and helpers and, less traditionally, as women with distinctive voices. Their voices are heard in their letters, dating from 1944 until Joy's death in 1960 Inscribed to the previous owner by the editor Janine Burke on the title page, and there is on the half title page a note by the previous owner "performed by Julia Blake and Helen Morse" in a neat handwriting.
