"This is a good book about children, and a wonderful book about rich children. Though it was conceived originally only for private distribution, it would have been a shame had the matter ended there. The author's upbringing - she is a granddaughter of the first Lord Cowdray - suffered from very few limitations of budget, but she was, by her own account, a shy and pessimistic child (imagine the frustrations of being a pessimist about the Pearsons!) who viewed with dismay some of the side effects of her good fortune. (This) is a sympathetic, funny, unreproachful book, a bonanza for the social historian, and written with a real feeling for the essence of childhood."
