Very Good condition. Text is clean and binding is tight. There is a small tear in the binding, 1/2" down from the top front. There is a tiny stain on the bottom of a few pages (edge only). There are some dents on a few page edges that can be seen when the book is closed.

This copy with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front pastedown is an original mailing envelope containing a lengthy Typed Letter Signed from Newman (1911-98), 2pp, 8½" X 11", Chicago, IL, 1986 August 5. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine.
