The development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition - Primary Care Version (DSM-IV-PC) was formally initiated in 1990 as a multidisciplinary effort involving representatives from family medicine (American Academy of Family Physicians, Association of Departments of Family Medicine, American Board of Family Practice and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine), internal medicine (Society of General Internal Medicine and American College of Physicians), paediatrics (American Academy of Paediatrics), obstetrics and gynaecology (American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), and psychiatry (American Psychiatric Association). Recent epidemiological research has demonstrated that individuals with psychiatric and substance abuse disorders are often seen only in primary care settings, and that the under-recognition of these disorders has a great impact on the health care of individuals, on broader public health issues, and on health care costs.
