In the months before the Normandy invasion, Ruge accompanied Rommel on his tours of the French coast. He was a firsthand witness to the frustration and despair that frequently overcame German officers at the impossibility of the task imposed on them by Hitler's irrational optimism. Defeat was certain, yet Rommel did his best to defend the coast against imminent invasion. He encouraged his men and tried to instill some feeling of optimism about the eventual outcome of the war and the reconstruction of Germany.
