The story takes the form of a series of letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood, so as to advise him on methods of securing the damnation of an earthly man, known only as "the Patient. The novel was dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien, and is among one of Lewis' most popular works.

The Screwtape Letters was first published by Geoffrey Bles, London, in 1942. The first edition dust jacket was issued in plain cream and the book was bound in black cloth. 

The first US edition was published by The Macmillan Company, New York in 1943. Bound in the original dark maroon cloth with black letters,1943 on the title page only. Price stamp of $1.50.
