The true meaning of each sport, theme or game - call it what you will - has long since been re-interpreted but for all that, some hidden dormant inner-feelings stir whenever we participate in or witness these activities. The innocent Bank Holiday fair with hoop-la or coconut shy is only a poor substitute for the ancient Throwing-at-Cocks sport. Fox hunting, with the excitement of the chase and ritualistic killing of the victim, is nothing more than a blood- offering to the ancient gods; while Morris Dancers and young maidens prancing around the freshly hewn trees are self-explanatory.
