The sizable fleet allocated to carry the B. E. F. to France consisted of cross-Channel passenger ships, for military personnel, and ocean-going and short sea cargo ships for transporting vehicles, stores, fuel and equipment. When it came to the evacuation, every type and size of ship--from passenger liner to motor yacht--was pressed into service as part of the evacuation fleet and the role which these vessels had played immediately prior to that time was largely irrelevant.
