Bullock was an articulate writer and one of Joseph's personal scribes. He later kept the official journal for Brigham Young of the first trek west. Bullocks biographer calls this record of the demise of Nauvoo "unparalleled." The editor summarizes a few of the journal's contents in the introduction: "We see the momentary glory associated with the Nauvoo Temple and the ordinances performed there.
