He wrote six or seven feature stories a year with at least one monthly column, and published five books. Carmichael hunted on all continents, and tok several safaris to Africa. As a guest of the late Shah, he was one of the last outsiders permitted to hunt in Iran. While in the Himalayas, he once spent three days at over 21,000 feet searching for a deer believed to be extinct.
