Mark Smith, 2015. New book, 48 pages. In the 1930s, Hubert Scott-Paine's British Power Boat Company built the first Motor Torpedo Boats to be ordered by the Royal Navy since the First World War. Despite this, BPBCo lost the competition to build larger and more capable designs to Vosper, whose name has become synonymous with 'MTB'. However, BPBCo's designs did see intense service with the Royal Navy (and others) as Motor Gun Boats and Motor Anti-Submarine Boats. Thanks to Scott-Paine, the Packard V-12 became available through Lend-Lease, becoming the standard marine engine in British fast boats built by Camper & Nicholson, Fairmile, Vosper and Whites. The 71ft 6in design began life as a pure gunboat, but thanks to the efforts and experience of people such as Lt. Cdr Robert Hichens DSO* DCS** RNVR, became a true dual purpose MTB/MGB - probably the best British 'short' boat of the Second World War.
