Christmas Stories Tapa blanda - 2016

de Charles Dickens

Acerca de este libro

The first edition of Dicken’s classic work A Christmas Carol, was published in 1843. It was a runaway success, and Dickens went on to write dozens of follow up Christmas tales over the next 25 years. Many of these stories are bundled in collections, titled Christmas Stories or Christmas Books.

The first four Christmas books published after the success of A Christmas Carol were: The Chimes: A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home (1845), The Battle of Life: A Love Story (1846), The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain: A Fancy for Christmas-Time (1848).

After the success of these stand-alone books, Dickens began to write and edit special Christmas-themed issues of Household Words, a twopenny journal he launched in 1850. He collaborated with well-known authors, as well as wrote his own stories. You can find multiple bound editions of these early stories from Household Words, such as "What Christmas Is" (1851), "The Poor Relation's Story "(1852), "The Schoolboy's Story" (1853), "The Seven Poor Travellers" (1854), "The Holly-Tree Inn" (1855), "A House to Let" (1858), "The Haunted House" (1859), "A Message from the Sea" (1860), and "Somebody's Luggage" (1862).

Información de la editorial

Christmas Stories consists of two pieces: "The Holly-Tree" (1855) and "Nobody's Story" (1853). Both pieces were originally published in the Christmas section of the journal Household Words (1850-1859). Household Words, of which Dickens was both editor and a contributor, served as a platform apart from his novels in which he could express his ideas and sentiments in a somewhat less-formalized manner and with greater immediacy. The reader will find that both pieces in this collection, like his novels, are vintage Dickens.

Acerca del autor

Nearly one hundred fifty years after his death, Charles Dickens remains one of the most popular English-language writers. As a chronicler of the human condition, he created characters-some are kind and virtuous, many are quirky and humorous, others epitomize evil-that leave an indelible mark on their reader. A world traveler and crusader against injustice, for years Dickens's energies seemed to have no limits, as he continued to expose the hypocrisy of Victorian society through his writing. In 1853, he took on a new responsibility: giving public readings of his works for charitable purposes. Finding that public readings could be more lucrative than writing, in 1858, he began giving performances on the professional lecture circuit, where he was in great demand in England and abroad. It was while on a reading tour in the United States in late 1867 and early 1868 that Dickens's health began to fail, which prompted his return to England. Exhausted from his many ventures, Dickens was at work on what would be his final novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, when he died June 9, 1870. He was fifty-eight years old.
